VISDatos | Santiago_2018, organized by the Laboratorio Visualización Datos UC of the School of Design of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, is the first international seminar to be held in Chile that deals with the visualization of data as an element and meeting space for various actors to promote social initiatives, research and industry.
In his presentation "The Spectrum of Influence: image and influence separately and together" Marek Tuzsynski (Tactical Tech Collective) talk about the role of visualization in political discourse by using powerful examples and discussing them against the efficacy of the ways they were produced, distributed and consumed. An image, even if only imaginary, has always played a significant role in political discourse. In particular when political actors use imagery to shift narratives of justice, rights or responsibilities.
An image is claimed to be worth a thousand words - but is it always as well formed, used and understood as words? Would we be able to measure the impact of the visual beyond its face value if translated into influence? And how would one measure such influence?
